Lights, Camera, ACTION!

Michael Negrete captured the adrenaline and excitement of action 2022, a competition between the classes at Glendora High School.

Every year, Glendora High School puts on a school event called action. It is one of the most anticipated events of the year. This year, Michael Negrete came and photographed this highly suspenseful event. Action is a competition between the classes at Glendora High School. There are numerous events where students from each grade compete to win the most points. This is a huge tradition at Glendora High School and has been around for a number of years.

Seniors cheering for their peers

Due to the pandemic, action was canceled during my sophomore and junior year. It was devastating for my class and the other three classes. One of the most anticipated events of the whole year was canceled two years in a row. So you can imagine the excitement when ASB announced that action could finally happen again. It was even more exciting when we heard that a professional photographer would take photos of the event.

Each year ASB chooses a new theme and gives each grade a different character; the theme of the 2022 action was Cars. Seniors were Lightning McQueen, Juniors were Chick Hicks, Sophomores were Mater, and Freshmen were tractors.

My favorite part of action is the murals that students designed and painted. I was one of the leading painters of the senior mural. The different murals can be seen in the backgrounds of many photos Michael Negrete took that night. It took us over three weeks to paint the entire mural. Seniors won first place in the mural competition; hearing that was one of the best parts of the night for my friends and me.

The whole night was a whirlwind of adrenaline and excitement. Each class wanted to win and have bragging rights that they won the first action after the pandemic. Glendora High Schools ASB created numerous games, events, and other fun things that contributed to the fun atmosphere of the night. One of the school's favorite events was the hacky sack race. There was a girl and a boy's race, captured above by Michael Negrete. Each grade cheered for their representative as they tried to hop across the gym floor.

The whole experience for me was insane. For example, I loved how each class supported their peers in the events. As soon as we got into the gym, the energy was already high and intense. We all stood on the bleachers and gym floor. The seniors yelled and chanted collectively to show their enthusiasm and school spirit. One of my favorite events is the class dances. Each class puts together a group to dance and compete against each other. To me, this event is the funniest and most fun to watch. Each class's energy is super high during the dances and energizes the crowd for the event-filled night.

Another favorite event was the basketball tournament. The students had to run back and forth on the court and shoot free throws. This event is filled with anticipation and nervousness as the players try their best to make the shots.

As seen in the photos above, Michael Negrete captured the enthusiasm in all the high schooler's faces. Seniors are usually the ones that win action, so being a senior this year was exhilarating. I was so excited for the whole event, especially at the end when the winner would be announced. We constantly chanted and yelled for our teams to win, showing our school spirit and our enthusiasm for finally being seniors.

Scooter races between sophomores and juniors

After all the games had been played, it was time for the winners to be announced. Mr. Titon, part of the admin at GHS, used this time to remind the students to be courteous of the community and each other. At this point, the freshman slowly started to trickle out of the gym. Although the event wasn't over, the freshman were scared of the other classes. Therefore a lot of them decided to leave before the winners were announced.

Seniors celebrating after they were announced the winners of action 2022.

The energy and anticipation in the room started to rise. The seniors waited anxiously to hear if they had won their last action or not. The freshman was announced in last place, juniors in third place, and sophomores in second place. Therefore, seniors were awarded first place! All the seniors jumped and hollered for joy as they rushed out the door to continue the night of excitement.
